Why do bad things happen to Christians?

Shouldn’t Christians get a break? Shouldn’t there be at least a little boost here on earth for making the right decision? How about something tangible to prove your faith is sure Even Mother Teresa complained that a lack of evidence undercut her faith.

Bad Things Happen To ChristiansIt's not about God giving blessings to Christians, it's about what we give to Him! God has already changed our heart of stone to a heart of flesh, giving us life... true life... eternal life. What else is there?

It's interesting that when Jesus told people about the kingdom, He never made it easy to become a follower of Him. For example, Jesus said:

“If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me." - Matthew 16:24

The cross was an instrument of torture. The word "excruciating" was invented to describe the extreme pain experienced on the cross. Yet Jesus tells us we are to pick up OUR cross... carry it as He did... and follow Him. He then went on to explain:

"For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it; but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it. For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?" - Matthew 16:25-26

In 2 Timothy 3:12 Paul tells Christians to not expect an easy life:

Indeed, all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will be persecuted. - 2 Timothy 3:12

What kind of promises are these? Who joins a group in order to be punished and persecuted? Does this make sense to you? Why would anyone want to become a Christian?

We love, because He first loved us. - 1 John 4:19

Why would anyone become a Christian? It's not about what we get. It's about God... Jesus is God. He is the one, creator God, who made everything by speaking it into existence. The God who made you. The God who owns you.

Yes, God blesses some Christians with great wealth. And God blesses some Christians with great poverty. In both cases we are to use what He has given us to serve Him in obedience. We are far from perfect in obedience, but the life of a true Christian (there are many false believers) will show increasing obedience over time.

What is the evidence of our faith? What is the evidence that someone is truly following Christ? It is that they are truly following Christ, meaning obeying Him. We are to become like Christ and He told us how to do that. We need to do what He said we are to do. Obeying Him. Loving Him. The evidence is a love for His Word. The evidence is a love for other Christians. The evidence is a hungering and thirsting for righteousness. Our ability to do these is a gift from God. These are the good gifts the Lord gives us.

Here is a comparison, from scripture, of a non-believer with a believer

Non-Believer (Galatians 5:19-21):

Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Believer (Galatians 5:22-24)

But the fruit [gifts] of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.

BTW... the evidence is that Mother Teresa was not a Christian. That's why there was a lack of evidence. Mother Teresa was a universalist, rejecting the God of the Bible and imagining a god who brought everyone into heaven. She wrote in her book book, "Life in the Spirit: Reflections, Meditations and Prayers;"

“If that individual thinks and believes that this is the only way to God for her or him, this is the way God comes into their life — his life. If he does not know any other way and if he has no doubt so that he does not need to search then this is his way to salvation.” (Pages 82)
